our home away from home.
Bulletin board outside classroom- ready for student ideas!!
First day of school!
Unfortunately, I didn't have my phone for the opening community circle. We introduced ourselves, our mood for the day, what our superpower would be (out of invisibility, ability to breathe underwater, ability to read minds, and ability to fly), and finally shared how our summer went.
We then spent the day doing activities to get to know each other and to set up rules for our classroom! We went over expectations, the layout of the classroom, homework policies...etc.
I gave each child interest inventories for math, science and reading, as well as goal-setting sheets and quizzes.
Tomorrow will be an excellent day In'shaa Allah!!

first week of school
Sept. 4th Note for Parents
***Parents- please note that the homework I am assigning this week for math and language is part of our Grade 5 review. As your child may have mentioned, we are spending the week reviewing Grade 5 material in preparation for the IFS diagnostic assessment next week, and so we had to review many topics in a short amount of time. I only selected a handful of questions out of the booklets given, so In'shaa Allah it won't take the students an excessive amount of time to finish the homework over the next few days. I will see how they did tomorrow in terms of time taken for homework! Generally speaking, math homework will consist of questions from the textbook/workbook, only dealing with one topic at a time. Jazakallah Khair!***
Alhamdulillah, the first week has been quite eventful! We have been establishing routines, getting to know each other, and reviewing material from Grade 5!

ART! We learned about adding value to our drawings (shading through different techniques). Students then sketched a classroom object using pencils. In'shaa Allah we will be using charcoal next week! (Note to self: buy charcoal! Haha).
SCIENCE!! (One of my personal favourites). We first used cookies to model the phases of the moon (I would say, for example, waning gibbous and they would have to scrape the icing off with their teeth to model what the moon looks like at that point). We of course gobbled on cookies afterwards to reward ourselves for our hard work ;)
Part 2 on Friday. We were simulating meteoroids crashing into the Moon's surface and leaving craters. Our experiment involved dropping different sizes of marbles from different heights into bowls filled with gravel. Some groups were quite vigorous with their throws, leading to the broken bowls you'll see below.
Clean-up was...busy. Science is messy, though! :)
